January 2026 Update
Starting in 2026, OakDOT will work with an engineering consultant to design the 66th Avenue BART to Bay Trail project.
The 66th Avenue project is complex and will involve many state, regional, and local agencies. It will also depend on input from community members and partners in Oakland. For more information, contact the Major Projects Division at mpd@oaklandca.gov.
Background
The 66th Avenue BART to Bay Trail project aims to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. It proposes a multi-use path that is separated from car traffic on 66th Avenue. The new path will connect the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at Oakport Street to the East Bay Greenway and Coliseum BART Station.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline is a 748-acre park and natural preserve located on the Oakland coastline. The park is home to miles of easy biking and walking, including the San Francisco Bay Trail. But, residents of East Oakland and visitors at the Coliseum have no way to access this destination without a car. 66th Avenue crosses three sets of train tracks, industrial land, and six different freeway ramps around Interstate 880. Other connections for people walking, rolling, or biking are more than two miles away.
This project was developed through multiple community efforts:

Funding
For planning, design, and permitting of 66th Avenue BART to Bay Trail project, OakDOT received $2.1 million of Measure BB funds in the 2024 Update of the Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC) Comprehensive Investment Plan and a $1.2 million grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy (SCC) in 2023.
