This page shares information on how to serve a subpoena for records and/or depositions/appearances to the Planning & Building Department.

Please Note: This page is only for the Planning & Building Department. The Planning & Building Department cannot accept subpoenas for other departments.

How to Serve a Subpoena

You can serve a subpoena to the Planning & Building Department by mail, by phone, or in person. Make sure your service includes:

  • Case number
  • Full address of the subject property (for records requests)
  • Full name of City staff (for depositions and appearances)
  • A check for the required fee made payable to the City of Oakland: $15 for records or $275 for depositions/appearances. 

Payment Options:

  • In person: Schedule an appointment and pay at the City Cashier's Office
  • By phone: Call 510-238-4774 (Visa and MasterCard accepted; $20,000 permit/payment limit)
  • By mail: Mail a check payable to City of Oakland
