Open Government

The Public Ethics Commission (PEC) works to make city government open, fair, and honest. Our goal is to help people understand how the government works and make it easier for them to get involved. We believe that when residents and government work together, they can create real and positive change in the community.

The PEC makes sure that Oakland’s Sunshine Ordinance is followed. This rule helps people get better access to public meetings and government information.

Oakland’s Sunshine Ordinance adds to state laws like the Ralph M. Brown Act and the California Public Records Act. It makes the rules clearer and gives the public more chances to see how the government works and get important information.
