Planning and Building inspections of buildings ensure safety for all Oaklanders. Permit inspections ensure that construction is going according to the approved plans, project conditions-of-approval, and all Building Code standards. All projects must follow State of California CalOSHA industry guidelines. Please read below for more information.

Applying for Building Permits

Plan Check, Review and Final Check
This section focuses on the formal review of submitted plans to ensure compliance with building, fire, and safety codes before permits are approved. It includes services for building plan checks, fire prevention reviews, and technical evaluations needed to move projects forward to permit issuance.
After Permits Issued
This section provides resources for managing permits after approval, including permit extensions, and reinstatements. It supports applicants in maintaining active permits and addressing project needs that arise during active construction phases.
Construction & Onsite Inspections
This section outlines inspection requirements during active construction to ensure all work complies with approved plans and city code standards. Project Finalization

Special Inspections – Provides additional information regarding Special Inspections which must be complete for Final.

Certificates of Occupancy (CO) – For projects that require a CO, this document will be issued within 90 days of final inspection approval.

Permit Inspections Services & Availability:
- Inspection issues shall be addressed in the field at the time of scheduled inspections whenever possible. Please consider sending an email to your project's primary permit inspector. Permit Inspectors can hold virtual office hours via Microsoft Teams. See our Inspectors Directory.
Senior Inspector/Supervisor Services & Availability:
- Please email InspectionInfo@oaklandca.gov. Senior Inspectors and Supervisors can meet at job sites to address high-level technical assistance issues when necessary.
