City of Oakland: Request for Information (RFI) – AI Use Case Pilots

The City of Oakland is calling AI innovators & researchers!

The City of Oakland is searching for innovative AI companies and researchers who want to partner with government to improve city services! The City is interested in developing “no-cost” AI pilot projects that have the potential to make a real difference for our community and organization. With 25 departments serving 430,000 residents, the City is ready to test the power of AI to drive efficiency, equity, and innovation!

Responsible AI on a Strong Foundation

The City’s AI Working Group (AIWG), established in 2024, has developed a pioneering AI Equity Statement(PDF, 113KB) and Security Guidelines(PDF, 96KB). Separately, it has started piloting Microsoft 365 Copilot as a personal AI assistant for staff. The AIWG is also implementing a complete data governance program and classification system that blocks AI from accessing sensitive information, which means that every AI pilot is built on a responsible approach to using artificial intelligence in government.

Pilot Structure

  • No-Cost, High-Impact: Collaborate with City Staff for 16 weeks. No fees, just real feedback and the chance to prove your solution in the public sector.
  • Future Opportunities: Successful pilots could open doors to long-term agreements.
  • Clear Governance: Every pilot is backed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) covering data rights, security, and equity.

AI Use Case Areas

30 ways to make an impact!

From digital accessibility and virtual assistants to wildfire drones and campaign finance transparency, the City’s AI Working Group has identified 30 high impact use cases.
