Tool Loan Program for Oakland Volunteer Events

Do you need a tool for your next Oakland cleaning or beautification project? Submit your request for tools below!

Request tools from Oakland Public Works for your volunteer event to green and clean Oakland. Projects must be volunteer events on City of Oakland land or right of way. Tools are available for gardening, trash clean-up, landscaping, and more.

Lending Guidelines

Before Your Event

  • Submit tool requests at least one week before your preferred pick-up date. More lead time is appreciated. Late requests may not be filled.
  • Major event months (January, April, and September): Requests must be submitted one month in advance due to citywide events (MLK Day, Earth Day, and Creek to Bay Day).
  • Long-term tool rentals are available for groups that conduct clean-ups more than once per month. Long-term tool rentals must be requested via email.

Tool Pick-Up

  • Pick up tools at- 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza (loading dock) or 5050 Coliseum Way. Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. 

Tool Return

  • Return tools within 5 days after your event.
  • After your event, please count tools and fill out the Tool Return Column on your tool slip.
  • Tools may be dropped off in the same pickup location. Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. 
  • Clean tools before returning.

After Your Event

  • After your volunteer event, report your activity to our reporting form.
  • If you do not report your event details or return your tools you will not be able to borrow tools a second time. 

⚠️ Important

  • Not all tool requests are guaranteed; Tool availability depends on our current inventory and how quickly others return their tools.
  • Power tools are not allowed to be used by volunteers.

Looking for Tools for your private residents? Check out the Oakland Public Library Tool Lending Program. Only residents or property owners of the cities of Oakland, Piedmont and Emeryville over the age of 18 years are eligible to borrow tools from the Tool Lending Library.
