Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Disabled Parking Zone (Blue Zone)?
It is a painted blue curb with a posted sign.
Does the City install Blue Zones for paratransit drop-off and pick-up?
Unfortunately, not at this time.
How much will it cost to install a Blue Zone?
How long will it take to process my application?
It can take up to 1-4 months depending on whether the application gets approved, denied or appealed.
Why might my application be denied?
There are several reasons for denial of an RDPZ request, including:
- The presence of another RDPZ within 150 feet of the one requested. RDPZs are not for exclusive use by an individual or group; it is on a first come first use. If there is already an RDPZ within 150 feet, you may use it if it is not occupied. On street parking is a scarce limited resource.
- An obstruction such as a tree between the requested RDPZ and the sidewalk. There must be a clear access connection to/from the RDPZ to the sidewalk.
- Insufficient room for the RDPZ. The RDPZ is a minimum of 20 feet long, plus three 3- to 5-foot clearance around.
- A slope greater than 5 percent. It is difficult for a wheelchair to navigate such a slope.
- A cross-slope (tilt of the road or sidewalk) greater than 5 percent. A wheelchair might tip over on such a slope.
