Early Childhood and Family Services

The City of Oakland Early Childhood and Family Services Programs offer free early childhood education and care, prenatal education and family services to low-income residents. These programs help prepare children for school from birth to age five.

Staff and parents work together to implement an education program that aligns to each child’s individual needs.

  • Infant & Toddler Options serve children from birth to 2 years old.
  • Preschool Options serve children aged 3 to 5 years.

Education Options and Locations

Based on the child's age and your preferred care environment, there are many options available for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and pregnant participants:

  • Center-Based: Traditional classroom setting available at various locations throughout Oakland
  • Home-Based: Weekly 90-minute educational visits at your home
  • Family Child Care Providers: Small group education and care provided in licensed homes
