Meet President Kevin Jenkins

Kevin Jenkins is a lifelong East Oakland resident, proud graduate of Oakland public schools, and a tireless advocate for safe, vibrant, and thriving neighborhoods. Elected in 2022 to represent District 6, Kevin brings firsthand knowledge of the community and a deep commitment to public service rooted in his upbringing as the son of two longtime Oakland Unified School District employees.

His public service career began on the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees, where he was elected in 2020 to represent Area 2, which includes all of East Oakland. At Peralta, Kevin fought for student housing, steered the district through the pandemic, and built partnerships between community colleges and local organizations.

In addition to his elected roles, Kevin has served on the Alameda County Public Health Commission, led housing programs for an anti-poverty nonprofit, and partnered with community groups to fight illegal dumping and blight. He is also a former President of the California Association of Black School Educators.

On the City Council, Kevin has focused on addressing gun violence, reducing homelessness, investing in affordable housing, and expanding the use of technology to improve public safety. In recognition of his leadership, he was selected by his peers to serve as Council President and later as Interim Mayor of Oakland.

Above all, Kevin is a proud father to his son - a second-generation Oaklander—and is committed to building a safer, more equitable city for the next generation.
