OPD News:

Today, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) is proud to announce the start of our 195th Police Academy, which includes 26 Police Officer Trainees (POT).

This academy class reflects the city and the department's ongoing commitment to hiring individuals who reflect Oakland. The 195th Academy is a diverse and multicultural group, with 23 males and three females, including 13 Oakland residents.

"We're excited to welcome the 195th Academy to the Oakland Police Department," said Chief Floyd Mitchell. Each person has committed to serving our community, with half of the Trainees already calling Oakland home. They bring a deep understanding and compassion for our community members."

“As I have repeated, voters supported Measure NN, which includes a comprehensive public safety strategy. Restarting our police academy represents a critical component of Measure NN's vision -- investing in Oakland's public safety infrastructure while building a police force that reflects our community's values.”

"Service before self is a call of honor and duty. Today, we recognize and thank a new class of trainees stepping up to the highest call of service, and committing themselves to the safety of the Oakland community," City Administrator Jestin Johnson said. "To the members of this class, I say the City of Oakland is here to support you at every step of the way. We look forward to your success and to our shared success together."

The 195th Police Academy is OPD’s first academy of the year, following the graduation of the 194th Academy in December.
