Generators are defined as stationary or portable compression ignition engines used to provide power to a structure or for a given activity. Zoning Review, Electrical, and Plumbing Permits (for natural gas generators) are required. For large generators, a Building Permit is also required.

When Is a Permit Required?
Installed generators require Zoning Review. Electrical, and Plumbing Permits (for natural gas generators) are required. For large generators, a Building Permit is also required.
Generators should be located at the side of a building or anywhere in the rear of a property. Creek protection and noise considerations may apply to the review.
Who Can Be Issued a Permit?
- Contractors who are licensed by the State of California with a classification appropriate for the work that will be performed and have a current Business Tax Certificate.
- Owners of a building or their legal representative.
