Request Family Medical Leave
The City provides eligible employees with job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the California Family Rights Act (CFRA). These laws allow employees to
take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons while maintaining group health benefits under the same terms as if the employee had continued to work.
Eligibility
Employees may be eligible for FMLA/CFRA leave if they:
- Have worked for the City for at least 12 months; and
- Have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12 months prior to the start of leave.
Qualifying Reasons for Leave
Eligible employees may take leave for the following reasons:
- The employee’s own serious health condition that makes them unable to perform essential job functions
- To care for a family member with a serious health condition
- The birth of a child or placement of a child through adoption or foster care
- Certain qualifying exigencies related to a family member’s military service (FMLA only)
Under CFRA, “family member” is defined broadly and may include a child, parent, spouse, domestic partner, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling.
Leave Entitlement
- Up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period
- Leave may be taken all at once or intermittently, when medically necessary
Benefits During Leave
During approved FMLA/CFRA leave:
- The City will maintain group health insurance coverage under the same conditions as active employment
Employees may be required to continue paying their portion of benefit premiums

Employees should notify their supervisor and/or dept. SPOC as soon as practicable when the need for leave is known. The City will require medical certification to support the need for leave under FMLA/CFRA.
