Fire Medical Services

Oakland Fire Department’s Medical Services Division is at the heart of how we care for our community during emergencies. This team ensures firefighters and first responders have the training, equipment, and support they need to provide high-quality medical care when it matters most. From everyday 911 calls to complex emergencies, they help keep Oakland prepared, responsive, and ready to serve.
Beyond emergency response, Medical Services also helps shape how the City approaches care. The division supports innovative programs like MACRO, which respond to non-emergency and mental health calls with the right kind of help. By working closely with healthcare providers, county partners, and community organizations, they help connect people to appropriate services—reducing pressure on emergency systems and improving outcomes for those who need support.
Medical Services also plays a key role in training and education. The division is building a strong, in-house program that prepares both Oakland firefighters and regional partners with the latest emergency medical skills. This focus on training, along with a commitment to equity and community partnerships, helps ensure that care is not only effective—but accessible, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of all Oakland residents.
