More Projects Now Exempt from Design Review

NEW! Faster Online Process for Small or Like-for-Like Projects
The City of Oakland recently updated its Planning Code to expand the list of projects now exempt from Design Review. This allows for faster review for “like-for-like" alterations, small additions, remodels, selected signs, fences, decks, and a range of other exempt projects (see below).
Apply Online with Our NEW Streamlined Application!
To make the process easier, we've implemented a new streamlined application for Design Review Exemption (DRX) through our Online Permit Center. Exempt projects no longer require submission of a lengthy development application or a pre-application Zoning Worksheet. Instead, you can now apply directly with basic plans for your project, key information, and a streamlined process to get your permits faster!
While some level of project review is still required, review times for exempt projects can be significantly shorter, saving you time and money. To be exempt, a project must meet all criteria as outlined in Oakland Planning Code Section 17.136.025.
