As Oakland residents prepare for Thanksgiving, they can help reduce waste and protect City infrastructure by reviewing the waste management guidance below.
Trash, Recycling, and Compost Sorting
What to Compost
- Leftover food and food scraps — including meat, bones and shellfish shells
- Coffee grounds, paper filters, and tea bags
- Paper napkins, towels, plates, cups, tablecloths, and other food-soiled paper
- Wine corks (unless they are synthetic or plastic—those should be trashed)
- Fats, oil, and grease: Let cool, then wipe small amounts into the compost with a paper towel
What to Recycle
- Aluminum pie pans and baking trays (wipe clean first)
- Cans and aluminum foil

Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Disposal
Cooking fats, oil and grease— such as pan drippings, cooking oil, shortening, dairy products, oily sauces, and salad dressings— should never be washed down the drain. This can cause sewer line blockages at home, and sewage overflows onto streets and into storm drains that flow to the Bay. To safely dispose of FOG:
- Pour cooking oils and grease into a compostable container (half gallon max) with a lid
- Remove remaining FOG by scraping greasy pans and absorbing oil with a paper towel
- Dispose of these items in your green compost cart (if available) or garbage
- To recycle larger amounts of FOG, please take it to a local FOG drop-off location
- For additional tips and resources, review the EBMUD Avoid A Clog Brochure(PDF, 2MB)
To report sewer overflows, residents should call OAK311 by dialing 311 or (510) 615-5566, 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.
