Grant from Alameda County Transportation Commission supports City's transition to cleaner, zero-emission municipal fleet

OAKLAND, Calif. — June 24, 2026 — The City of Oakland is continuing to advance its climate and sustainability goals through the acquisition of a new battery-electric street sweeper and a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station, supported by funding from the Alameda County Transportation Commission's Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA) program.

The City was awarded a TFCA grant to help fund the purchase of one battery-electric Elgin Broom Bear street sweeper and one solar-powered electric vehicle charging station. The TFCA-funded electric street sweeper will replace an existing diesel-powered unit, helping reduce emissions associated with municipal operations while maintaining essential street cleaning services throughout Oakland. The solar-powered charging station will further strengthen the City's growing network of charging infrastructure and support the ongoing electrification of municipal vehicles.

"This investment represents another important step in Oakland's transition to a cleaner and more sustainable municipal fleet," said Oakland Public Works Director Liam Gardland. "By replacing older diesel-powered equipment with zero-emission technology and expanding our charging infrastructure, we are reducing emissions, improving operational sustainability and building a fleet that is better prepared to serve Oakland residents for years to come."

The award builds on Oakland's long-standing commitment to addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For more than two decades, the City has pursued policies and programs that support cleaner transportation technologies and alternative fuel vehicles.

Oakland Public Works launched implementation of the City's Fleet Electrification Plan and began pursuing state, regional and federal funding opportunities to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and supporting infrastructure.

To date, Oakland has secured seven grants directly and has been selected as the host site for two additional grant-funded projects. This amounts to nearly $9 million, which will be combined with Oakland’s matching share of approximately $7 million for a collective investment of nearly $16 million. These funds support:

  • Installation of 136 electric vehicle chargers across six City facilities

  • Deployment of 15 medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles, including street sweepers, refuse trucks, flatbed trucks and medium-duty pickups

  • Installation of five solar canopy charging stations with battery backup systems

  • Deployment of one autonomous, transportable, solar-powered electric vehicle charging station

  • Dynamic electric-grid vehicle charging software

  • Consultant services to support long-range electric vehicle and charging infrastructure planning
