Oakland Appoints Director of Parks, Recreation & Youth Development

Oakland, CA – Today, the City of Oakland announced the appointment of Myka Hammock as the new Director of Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development (OPRYD). 

 

A long-time, seasoned leader within the department, Director Hammock brings extensive experience, deep institutional knowledge, and a strong commitment to serving Oakland’s diverse communities. Over the course of her career, she has played a key role in advancing programs that promote youth development, community wellness, and equitable access to parks and recreational opportunities. 

 

City Administrator Jestin Johnson said, “Myka Hammock’s experience makes her well-positioned to continue elevating our parks, recreation, and youth development department, implementing a multi-layered vision rooted in the principles and values of Oakland. I look forward to supporting Director Hammock as she leads this vital department and continues to serve Oakland residents in this new position.” 

 

Under her leadership, OPRYD will continue to strengthen its mission of providing safe, inclusive, and high-quality programs and spaces that enrich the lives of Oakland residents. Director Hammock has been instrumental in fostering partnerships, expanding community-centered programming, and ensuring that city resources are aligned with neighborhood needs.
