OPD Arrests Suspect in Assault Case, Recovers Homemade Firearms

OPD NEWS:

A six-week Oakland Police Department (OPD) investigation led to one arrest and the recovery of several handmade weapons capable of firing ammunition and projectiles.

On June 8, 2026, a victim was pistol-whipped in the 1100 block of 70th Avenue. The suspect fled the scene in a white vehicle. With the victim's assistance, OPD officers identified the suspect on June 18, 2026, and investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) obtained a warrant for the suspect's arrest.

On July 21, 2026, officers arrested the suspect and located their vehicle. They recovered two homemade firearms (one loaded) designed to fire live ammunition and projectiles, a BB gun, ammunition, and suspected narcotics.

A search of the residence where the suspect had been staying uncovered additional firearms, homemade weapons, ammunition, and suspected narcotics.

OPD is seeing a rise in the number of dangerous homemade weapons within the community. These improvised weapons pose a significant risk to the public and the individuals who possess or use them.
