If You Have Received a Postcard Regarding Rental Activity in the City of Oakland And you ARE renting out property—whether residential, commercial, or short-term—you are required to register as a landlord with the City of Oakland and pay business tax. This includes rentals through third-party platforms such as Airbnb, Vrbo, and Section 8.

If you began renting your property in 2026, you can register quickly online by visiting Oaklandca.gov and selecting “Apply for a Business Tax License.”
