Congressionally Directed Spending was awarded to fund the Lake Merritt Healthy Lake Initiative in the fiscal year 2024 appropriations cycle (Requestors: Lee, Feinstein, Padilla CA). The Environmental Protection Agency will be managing the grant.
The funding awarded to the City is intended to address excessive algae growth and low dissolved oxygen concentrations in Lake Merritt to protect aquatic life and prevent fish kills. The scope of the grant includes the following tasks:
Task 1. Monitoring and Evaluation. This task will involve the development and implementation of a monitoring plan, and the evaluation of the monitoring results and other data.
Task 2. Management Planning and Implementation. This task will involve collaboration with partners and the public to evaluate potential management actions, developing a plan for implementing management actions (installation of aeration fountains) and monitoring the effectiveness of the management actions.
