The City of Oakland received a total of $5.1M of Highways Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds to enhance safety and accessibility for people walking, biking, and rolling across the City of Oakland through three projects:
This project will install Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), pedestrian refuge islands, bulb-outs, and upgrade crosswalks and curb ramps at non-signalized crossings on major streets.
Design highlights:
• Installing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon with pedestrian and bike push button
• Construction of pedestrian curb ramp, median Island, pedestrian refuge island, corner bulbs out
• Painting new high visibility crosswalk

Installing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon with pedestrian push button
This project is expected to begin construction in Summer 2027.
This project will install Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), pedestrian countdown heads, protected left turns, and other safety upgrades. This intersection will also provide an interface between the future Bancroft Greenway Project and the 90th Avenue Repaving Project.
This project is currently in design with an expected construction start of Summer 2028.
Enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility by adding leading pedestrian intervals, longer pedestrian clearance times and pedestrian countdown signal heads at 51 signalized intersections within Oakland’s Priority Equity Neighborhoods
This project is expected to begin construction/installation Fall 2028.
