Oakland's Summer Food Program Serves Youth Across the City
Published on May 26, 2026
As schools close for summer break, the City of Oakland is once again ensuring that children and youth across the city have access to nutritious meals.
Through the federally funded Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the City will provide free meals at over 50 sites citywide from June 1 through August 7, 2026. The program is open to all children ages 18 and under, as well as adults with disabilities enrolled in school programs.
Sites will operate across parks, libraries, recreation centers, and community-based organizations, continuing Oakland’s longstanding commitment to supporting youth and families during the summer months when school meals are not available.
“The City of Oakland is committed to making sure our youth have access to healthy meals all year long,” said Mayor Barbara Lee. “The Summer Food Program is more than just a resource, it is a vital investment in the health and well-being of Oakland families.”
In 2026, the City anticipates serving tens of thousands of meals, building on more than 40 years of SFSP service in Oakland. Meals meet federal nutrition standards and are provided at no cost to families.
The program is administered by the City of Oakland’s Human Services Department, which oversees site coordination, vendor partnerships, and compliance with federal and state guidelines.
“Every summer, this program plays a critical role in supporting children and families across Oakland,” said Lea Lakes, Interim Director of the Human Services Department. “We are excited to continue delivering this service and ensuring access to healthy meals in neighborhoods throughout the city.”
