Oakland completes section of regional trail connecting BART stations
Published on June 10, 2026
Oakland, Calif. — June 10, 2026 — Today, the City of Oakland and community members celebrated the completion of a new segment of the East Bay Greenway, a multi‑agency effort to build a regional trail along the BART corridor between Lake Merritt BART and South Hayward BART. The newly finished section is near Coliseum BART, providing safer and more convenient options for walking, biking and scootering in East Oakland.
The City of Oakland has committed to building two segments of this larger project. The first, which was celebrated today, runs along San Leandro St. from Seminary to 75th Avenues. This stretch is on the High Injury Network, the 8% of streets where 60% of severe and fatal collisions occur in Oakland.
The segment responds directly to community concerns about fast and aggressive driving along San Leandro St. while providing safer options for walking, biking and scootering. It also strengthens connections in East Oakland and improves access to Coliseum BART for people traveling without a car.
“Investing in East Oakland’s infrastructure is essential to supporting vibrant, healthy and connected communities,’ said Josh Rowan, Director of the Oakland Department of Transportation. “This project is an important step toward a more equitable transportation network, one that prioritizes safety, access and the needs we’ve heard directly from residents.”
Construction for this section began in June 2023 and represents an investment of approximately $4 million. Funding came from a combination of grants and measures, with about $130,000 coming from city dollars.
The next Oakland‑led segment will be constructed on East 12th St. between 35th and 54th Avenues. Construction is expected to begin wintertime this year. Alameda County Transportation Commission will complete the remaining Oakland portions of the trail.
