Oakland Increases Safety Enhancements in Downtown and Uptown Areas

Published on June 04, 2026

Oakland, CA  — City of Oakland today announced a coordinated set of community safety and operations improvements being rolled out on Friday and Saturday nights along Telegraph Avenue and Broadway, helping to ensure that residents and visitors can fully experience Oakland’s Arts and Entertainment District in a safe, fun, and inclusive way. This work builds on improvements and investments announced in March 2026.

First Friday community events are safe, successful, and invaluable for uplifting Oakland voices and culture. In response to community concerns about unrelated incidents that occurred in the adjacent areas of downtown and uptown, usually several hours after First Fridays events, the City is focusing investments in the following areas starting this Friday, June 5:

  • Public Safety: Oakland Police Department (OPD) will provide enhanced staffing throughout the event and into early Saturday morning across the Downtown, Uptown, and KONO areas. OPD will coordinate with city and county partners on enforcement, focusing on unpermitted vending, bar compliance, and illegal parking.
  • Violence Prevention: To help ensure alternatives to enforcement can help prevent issues, staffing from the Department of Violence Prevention will provide preventative support based on their mission and jurisdiction if needed in advance of Friday’s events, and the City’s MACRO program will patrol the area on the day of the events to assist with behavioral issues and individual well-being.
  • Public Health: Code Enforcement, Alameda County Health, and the Fire Marshal staff will be monitoring the illegal vending of alcohol and drugs.
  • Clean Streets: City street sweepers and illegal dump crews will be on site to clean the streets after the event and continuing into the evening.
  • Public Access: Parking will be strongly enforced to ensure safety and accessibility of available spaces, and hard barriers will be used for road closures. See below for no parking zones and road closures. Anticipate strict parking enforcement, including citations and towing.

“Let me be clear: we will not tolerate violence in our downtown districts during and after our celebrated First Friday events – or anytime, anywhere,” said Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. ”I support an all-hands-on-deck approach to public safety. We are rolling out safety enhancements with a focus on addressing incidents that have occurred several hours after these events end. Community safety is our absolute priority, not just in our entertainment districts, but in every neighborhood across Oakland.”

“We want everyone to safely enjoy the vibrant nightlife in our Uptown and Downtown areas, and we will not allow the disruptive actions of a few to ruin that experience," said Councilmember Carroll Fife, who represents the district that includes the Uptown and Downtown neighborhoods. "Our goal is to ensure local businesses thrive while protecting our community. Yesterday’s town hall at Cloud Park allowed us to listen directly to residents' concerns and share the City's concrete actions to address ongoing safety issues. I want to thank the Mayor and City Administration for their steadfast commitment to improving and securing these vital neighborhoods."

The announcement was shared by Uptown and Downtown business owners, including Michele McQueen. McQueen shared this statement:

"The Oakland business community welcomes the City's enhanced public safety and operations efforts to support our Arts and Entertainment District and address the issues that have affected our downtown and uptown neighborhoods in recent months.

"Our businesses, employees, and customers have experienced the negative impacts of late-night incidents that occur after community events have concluded. These activities undermine public confidence, discourage visitors, create safety concerns for workers and patrons, and place additional strain on the small businesses that are essential to Oakland's economic and cultural vitality.

"We love Oakland and are proud to be part of a city known for its creativity, diversity, entrepreneurship, and vibrant arts scene. We appreciate Mayor Barbara Lee's leadership and the collaborative efforts of the Oakland Police Department, Department of Violence Prevention, MACRO, city staff, community organizations, and regional partners who have listened to the concerns of residents and business owners and responded with meaningful action.

"We are encouraged by this coordinated approach and remain hopeful that these efforts will help bring an end to the disruptive activity that has impacted our commercial districts. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the City to ensure Oakland remains a safe, welcoming, and thriving destination for residents, visitors, artists, and businesses alike."
