Who Can Be Issued a Permit?
1. Contractors who are licensed by the State of California with a classification appropriate for the work that will be performed and have a current Business Tax Certificate.
2. Owners of a building or their legal representative.
House Stairways and Railings Details & Requirements
Stairways and Railings Details for Houses:
For Wood Framed Exterior Door Landing & Steps:
- Stair to be minimum 36" in width with minimum 36" x 36" landings at top and bottom
- All wood to be pressure-treated or natural decay resistant
- All fasteners to be hot dipped galvanized
Stairways and Railings:
- Stairways shall not be less than 36" in clear width at all points above the permitted handrail height and below the required headroom height
- Handrails shall not project more than 4.5" on either side of the stairway and the minimum clear width of the stairway at and below the handrail height, including treads and landings, shall not be less than 31.5" where a handrail is installed on one side and 27" where handrails are provided on both sides
- The minimum headroom in all parts of the stairway shall not be less than 6'8" measured vertically from the sloped line adjoining the tread nosing or from the floor surface of the landing or platform on that portion of the stairway
- A flight of stairs shall not have a vertical rise larger than 151" between floor levels or landings
- The maximum stair riser height shall be 7.75"
- The stair tread depth shall be not less than 10"
- There shall be a floor or landing at the top and bottom of each stairway
