Public Art in Affordable Housing: Overview and Implementation in Oakland (2024)

In collaboration with East Bay Housing Organization's (EBHO) Affordable Housing Month in May 2024, the City of Oakland's Cultural Affairs Division and Housing & Community Development Department hosted a workshop to explore the intersection of art and housing in Oakland. Learn from experts from Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA), East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC), and MidPen Housing about successful implementation strategies for incorporating public art into affordable housing projects. Discover how public art can enhance affordable housing projects and create vibrant communities.

City of Oakland Anti-Displacement Strategic Planning Engagement Opportunity

In October 2024, the City of Oakland’s Department of Housing and Community Development conducted several engagement sessions focused on the Anti-Displacement Strategic Action Plan. These sessions addressed important strategies, including homelessness prevention, tenant legal services, property owner protections, habitability, and the Rent Adjustment Program. The feedback we received from the community was crucial in shaping our priorities and implementation strategy. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. 2002 Pedestrian Master Plan

Adopted by the City Council in 2002, the vision of the Pedestrian Master Plan is to promote a pedestrian-friendly environment; where public spaces, including streets and off-street paths, will offer a level of convenience, safety and attractiveness to the pedestrian that will encourage and reward the choice to walk.

Sidewalk Café Permit

Sidewalk cafés are temporary, open-air seating areas that help create vibrant streets.

Construction Inspections

The Right-of-Way Management Division Construction Inspections team manages third-party construction and activity in the public right-of-way. Our team works to minimize construction impacts to the traveling public, preserve City assets and utility infrastructure, and ensure contractors working in City right-of-way abide by City codes, plans, and standards.

High Injury Network 2024

The Oakland High Injury Network (HIN) is a map of the corridors and intersections where the most severe and fatal crashes are concentrated. This map was updated in May of 2024 with crash data from 2017 to 2021. This map represents the 8% of streets responsible for 60% of the severe and fatal collisions in the Oakland and will guide investment in roadway safety improvements.

Senate Bill 721 (Building Standards: Decks and Balconies: Inspection) would require any building subject to these provisions that is proposed for conversion to condominiums to be sold to the public after January 1, 2019, to have the required inspection conducted prior to the first close of escrow of a separate interest in the project, and would require the inspection report and written confirmation by the inspector that any recommended repairs or replacements have been completed to be submitted to, among others, the Department of Real Estate and included in certain required statements and reports, as specified.
