While there is currently no set date for resuming in-person counter service, the Planning & Building Department will continue to offer the following online and over-the-phone services.

Laptop, notebook, phone

As the State of California moves towards lifting restrictions and allowing businesses to open at full capacity on June 15, Oakland’s Planning & Building Department has significantly enhanced public access to an array of online services.

While there is currently no set date for resuming in-person counter service, the Planning & Building Department will continue to offer the following online and over-the-phone services:

Enhanced Online Permit Center Offerings - The Department has increased the types of permits available online; streamlined the look to boost visual clarity; and expanded access to key services. Collectively, these updates help to create a more comprehensive, modernized way for the public to apply for services 24 hours a day, seven days a week at an individual’s convenience.

Customers who have questions about their permit status, or who need guidance on what permits are required for their projects may now find ready answers at our new interactive Permit Questions Portal. Over 30 of the most commonly asked questions are outlined with immediate answers, along with links to key resources and an online form to ask follow-up questions of staff.

Sometimes it’s easier to understand things by listening and watching, so the Department has created a series of tutorial videos that highlight how customers can access and use different services.

The Department continues to work on major initiatives, including the General Plan and the Downtown Oakland Specific Plan. Visit their respective pages for updates and calls to action.
