Oakland Public Works Invites Residents to Dispose of Bulky Junk for Free at This Month’s Bulky Block Party on Sept. 24

Commercial customers are not eligible for free drop-off and can dispose of materials nearby at the Waste Management Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro

An Oaklander drops off a load of bulky junk for free at the monthly Bulky Block Party

Every month, more Oakland residents are taking advantage of the Bulky Block Party free bulky junk drop off events – typically held the last Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm at 7101 Edgewater Drive. This month, Oakland Public Works (OPW), which organizes the event, is making some adjustments to keep lines and wait times shorter and the experience more convenient for residents.

While the event has always been for Oakland residents only, some customers have used the event for commercial trash. Commercial customers will be redirected from these events – they may pay to dispose of large trash loads nearby at the Waste Management Davis Street Transfer Station, located at 2615 Davis Street in San Leandro.

Additionally, OPW will be limiting rental vehicles allowed at the event. Still allowed are personal vehicles and rental moving vehicles like trucks and vans – up to a length of 10’. Rental moving trucks over 10’ will be redirected to the Davis Street Transfer Station.

These updates to the Bulky Block Party service are intended to keep more Oaklanders moving through the line more swiftly.

OPW knows Oaklanders take pride in their neighborhoods and want to do what they can to keep them clean and healthy, so today’s announcement is intended to support the community by promoting services that are available and free. There are several options for disposing of large items, additional to the Bulky Block Party events No Oakland resident should have to pay extra to have their bulky items disposed. To dispose of items that won’t fit in your trash cart, the following services are available at no charge:

  • Curbside bulky pickup service is available to all Oakland residents, provided by WMAC. As announced in November, this includes improved access for renters. Residents in Multi-Family Dwellings (buildings more than four residential units) can now schedule a curbside appointment once a year directly with WMAC instead of requesting appointments through their landlords as they formerly had to. Residents in Single-Family Dwellings (buildings with up to four residential units) can schedule an appointment for bulky items collection at the curbside, increased from once per year to twice per year. Find the service terms and instructions at www.oaklandrecycles.com. Contact WMAC to schedule a bulky pickup by calling 1-888-WM-BULKY.
  • All Oakland residents may schedule appointments with WMAC to drop off their bulky items at no charge at the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex and Transfer Station (located at 2615 Davis Street in San Leandro). To schedule an appointment call (510) 613-8710.
  • Attend a monthly Bulky Block Party!

Fast, Free Drop Off of Household Hazardous Waste: Household hazardous waste never belongs in any of the curbside carts, and it is not accepted at the Bulky Block Party events. Take fluorescent bulbs, paints, stains, solvents, thinners, adhesives, pesticides, cleaners, household garden and auto chemicals, spray cans, batteries and electronic waste to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 2100 East 7th Street, Oakland. This service, provided by Alameda County, is free to all Oakland residents. Visit household-hazwaste.org or call (800) 606-6606 for more details, to schedule an appointment, or for hours of operation.

All Oakland community members can learn more about trash, recycling, and compost services available in Oakland by going to www.oaklandrecycles.com.
