OPD NEWS:

Public Safety Advisory: ATM Robberies

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is seeing an uptick in robberies of individuals at ATMs over the past month.

In several of the robberies, the victim completed their transaction at the ATM and was walking away when they were confronted. The armed individuals then rob the victims of their personal property and leave the area on foot or by vehicle.

The Department is closely tracking this current trend, including descriptions of those responsible and their vehicles. If you are a victim or have information regarding those who may be responsible for these violent crimes, please call 510-238-3326.

OPD is providing this information to help reduce the risk to our community members and those visiting our city from being a victim of a crime. Please use the following safety tips when making deposits/withdrawals from your local bank’s ATMs.

REDUCE YOUR RISK:

  • Always scan the area and watch for suspicious persons or activity around an ATM.
  • Select an ATM that is in a well-lit and populated area.
  • If you get cash – put it away immediately. Do not stand at the ATM and count your money.
  • When leaving an ATM location, make sure you are not being followed. If you are being followed, drive to a safe place including the police department or fire station and call 911.
  • Call the OPD non-emergency number, 777-3333, to report suspicious persons.

OPD’S COMMITMENT:

  • OPD Commanders are deploying more officers in the parts of Oakland where the increase in armed robberies is occurring.
  • OPD’s Violent Crime Operations Center (VCOC) and Patrol Division are using intelligence-led policing to identify and arrest those responsible

Working together, we can reduce violence in Oakland.
