OPD NEWS:

OPD is Investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting

Today just before 3:00 PM, Oakland Police Officers responded to the 2600 block of Fisher Avenue on reports of an armed carjacking and robbery.

Oakland Police Officers located the vehicle and the suspect in the area of 49th Street and Clark Street. As officers attempted to contact the suspect, the suspect fired several shots at officers.

The suspect retreated to the carjacked vehicle and fled. Officers pursued the vehicle from a distance, as the police helicopter (ARGUS) followed overhead.

The armed suspect drove into the 5900 block of Ocean View Drive, where the suspect began using the carjacked vehicle to ram OPD vehicles and officers.

OPD officers discharged their duty firearms. The suspect was struck and transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. No OPD officers were physically injured. Officers recovered a loaded firearm and the carjacked vehicle.

This officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Division, and the Oakland Community Police Review Agency.

This has been a very violent night in the City of Oakland, as OPD is also investigating a homicide and shooting that occurred Saturday night.

Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong will hold a news conference on Monday to give further details on all these incidents.
