OPD Investigations

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating a bomb threat on August 29, 2023, at Chabot Elementary School in the 6600 block of Chabot Road.

Just before 7:30 AM, an employee with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) notified OPD of a bomb threat. Officers immediately responded to the scene, established a perimeter, and began the safe evacuation of approximately 50 students and staff members. All students were reunited with their parents/guardians.

OPD collaborated with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) K-9 bomb detection team to ensure the school was safe to re-enter. Just before 12:00 p.m., OPD broke down the perimeter and left the scene.

In addition, OPD is actively investigating a hate speech incident. OPD investigators are looking into any possible connection between this incident and the bomb threat alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

This is an ongoing investigation. No additional details are being released at this time.
