OPD Investigating Violent Crime Spree, Three People Killed In 24 Hours

The City of Oakland has experienced a surge in violent crime this week. On Thursday, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) investigated 32 robberies within 24 hours. These crimes varied from armed robberies to carjackings citywide. In multiple cases, individuals used the stolen vehicles to commit additional robberies.

Based on the information provided by victims and witnesses, many of these cases appear to be crimes of opportunity. The suspects have been identified as two separate groups of females and males ranging in ages from as young as 11 to their early 20s.

Investigations show there are usually two or more suspects in a vehicle looking for distracted victims. The driver usually remains with the vehicle as the other suspects confront the individual. The victim is robbed and carjacked while sitting in their parked vehicle or just as they arrive at their destination.

OPD’s Violent Crime Operations Center (VCOC) is dedicating resources focused on taking these individuals into custody.

Reduce Your Risk:

• If you’re involved in a vehicle accident, pull into a well-lit area like a gas station or a business if possible.

• Do not get out of the vehicle if you do not feel safe.

• Call 911

Additional Safety Tips:

• Park in well-lit and well-traveled areas.

• Have your keys accessible before going to your car.

• When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings.

• When in your vehicle keep doors locked and windows closed.

• Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running.

Since Wednesday, homicide investigators continue to follow up on the deaths of three people killed in Oakland. The homicides occurred within a 24-hour period and investigators are following up on leads.

“Three families are forever changed by this senseless gun violence,” said Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong. “I’m committed to reducing the violence in Oakland with all available resources in my power. However, this isn’t a mission for one person or one department. We rely on our partnership with community members to help bring an end to the violence.”

The VCOC is assisting with these investigations. We are asking community members to come forward if they have information and contact our Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
