Oakland, CA – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf traveled to Washington D.C. today to meet with federal lawmakers to increase funding for homeless services, affordable housing, and infrastructure improvements.
On Tuesday, Mayor Schaaf will speak at a Bloomberg Government event, “The Future of Multifamily Housing: Building Access and Affordability,” discussing Oakland’s ambitious “17K/17K Housing Plan” that will protect 17,000 households from displacement and build 17,000 new housing units by 2024.
“The federal government needs to know how the cost of living crisis impacts residents on the ground,” Schaaf said. “My job is to make sure Oakland is seen and heard, loud and clear, and that our deepest concerns are their immediate interests.”
On Wednesday, Mayor Schaaf will attend the Global Women’s Leadership Initiative to discuss the Oakland Promise, the innovative “cradle-to-career” education initiative that aims to triple the number of college graduates from Oakland by 2025.
The mayor’s itinerary includes meetings with the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
She will return to Oakland on Thursday, October 19.
