Oakland, CA – The City of Oakland’s Workforce Development Board is launching a free, online skills training platform offered by Metrix Learning. Taking courses can help Oaklanders improve a wide variety of skills, earn industry certificates, launch into new careers or advance up the career ladder. Metrix Learning offers more than 5,000 courses leading to over 180 industry certificates, with online classes in English, Spanish and Cantonese. Accessible 24/7, the self-paced courses allow users to take the classes when it is convenient for them. Register at: https://oakland.metrixlearning.com/

“Through this free training platform, those Oaklanders who were laid off when sectors of the economy shutdown have another resource to build the skills needed for in-demand jobs,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. “We want to support our residents as they return to work and ensure they experience a fulfilling career path as well as job security.”

A self-administered assessment helps identify users’ interests and skills gaps and creates an individual training plan aligned with a targeted career pathway. Basic and introductory classes are offered on computer skills, digital literacy, job search, and basic skills such as business writing, problem solving, cultural sensitivity, business etiquette, customer interactions, manufacturing safety, resolving conflicts and more.

Certifications range from business software and IT/tech platforms to project management and human resources. There is 24/7 mentoring access to a representative who is knowledgeable about the certification content. Certification tracks range in the number of courses and total training hours involved. Please note that users will not become certified solely through taking these courses, and must take an exam at a proctored testing center to earn a final industry certification. Exam fees are not included with the Metrix license.

While intended to help laid-off workers by enhancing skills needed in today’s job market, Metrix is open to all Oakland residents, both adult and youth, regardless of employment status. Oakland-based business owners can also use the system for themselves or employees.

If you are an adult or youth in need of more individualized assistance, please contact one of the America’s Job Centers or Youth Services Providers listed at https://www.eastbayworks.com/.

If you do not have access to high-speed Internet or a computer, please approach one of the providers list at eastbayworks.com to coordinate access.

Funding to acquire the platform came from the City’s CARES Act Funding allocated from the State of California.
