In the Spring of 2023 the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) awarded the City of Oakland a five-year $3 million grant that in part provides funding for security measures for Oakland licensed cannabis operators. Specifically, three-hundred and thirty-two thousand dollars ($332,000) is available annually between July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2028 for grants to licensed cannabis operators to cover the cost of hiring onsite security. Funding will be dispersed each fiscal year following an annual application process.
For fiscal year 2023-2024 onsite security funding will be limited to the following licensed cannabis businesses:
- Brick and Mortar Dispensaries
- Shared-Use Manufacturing Facilities
- Cannabis businesses that operate at a "campus" style property that houses multiple cannabis businesses (no less than three) that would all utilize the services of the same onsite security.
Applications for funding for fiscal year 2023-2024 must be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 17th. The size of the grant to each operator will depend on the number of applications the City receives prior to the application deadline; however, staff anticipates disbursing individual grants of approximately $15,000.
