Gabriela Vivas-Suraez is a proud Latina and immigrant from Sahuayo, Michoacan, Mexico. She is the first person in her family to attend college. Gabriela is an empathetic leader who is passionate about helping people in her community. She previously worked as a lead organizer at ACCE (Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment). Some of her career highlights included working with immigrant and low-income communities to stop harassment against tenants and unlawful evictions, as well as partnering with Oakland Community Land Trust to secure affordable housing in the Fruitvale neighborhood.
