Help us make the City’s website work better for Oaklanders. We’re redesigning how Oaklanders access important city services. Complete this 5-10 minute exercise to test how well the new navigation works.

Material Consumption and Waste Reduction

The cycle of consuming and disposing of materials in Oakland accounts for a small portion of local greenhouse gas emissions, but a full 39% of global, or lifecycle emissions. This section includes all food and goods that we consume or purchase, and whether, when, and how we throw them away.

Oaklanders have access to robust recycling and composting services, but recyclable and organic (compostable) materials still end up in the landfill.

Use the links below to learn more about how material consumption and waste fit into the climate picture, find ways to reduce your overall consumption that fit your lifestyle, and properly sort your garbage, compost, and recyclables.
