Sidewalk Repair Policies

Below are some major policies that guide the repair of sidewalks in Oakland.

Sidewalk Liability Ordinance
Oakland property owners are responsible for maintaining safe sidewalks to eliminate tripping hazards.

Sidewalk Repairs at Title Transfer Ordinance
Oakland property owners are required to ensure sidewalks are free of damage at the time of property transfer.

No-Cost Repairs for Low-Income Property Owners
The Department of Transportation can complete sidewalk repairs at no cost to qualifying low-income property owners (subject to available funding).

Summer Discount on Sidewalk Permits
Beginning July 1, 2019 and ending September 30, 2019, sidewalk repair permit fees are waived to encourage Oakland property owners to repair damaged sidewalks.
