About

In September 2023, The City of Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT), assisted by 360 Total Concept, formed the first cohort of a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) to advise on community priorities and inform projects led by OakDOT’s Major Projects Division. Applications were distributed to over 30 community leaders and organizations in the neighborhoods in which MPD projects are located in. Ten members representing various stakeholder groups (i.e., advocacy organizations, chambers of commerce, neighborhood associations, business districts, faith-based, and trades) were selected to join the CAC. These individuals were selected based on their representation of the geographies that MPD projects are based in as well as for their deep knowledge of their communities. The CAC consists of 10 members who committed to a 7-month term as the projects’ community thought partners.

Committee’s main duties:

  • Provide guidance to the City on the transportation needs and priorities of the community as it relates to the transportation projects being designed.
  • Serve as ambassadors who share information to their network/members.
  • Attend and participate in monthly meetings with the City.

Names and affiliations of the first cohort of the CAC:

  • Jalil Butron, YouthBeat
  • Zachary Carey, True Vine Ministries
  • Carl Chan, Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce
  • Eddie Dillard, Hispanic Engineering and Building Constructors
  • Ms. Margaret Gordon, West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project
  • Mike Jacob, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association
  • Derreck Johnson, Black Owned Project 365
  • Sky Marazzi, Oakland Chamber of Commerce
  • Joe Partida, Oakland Latino Chamber of Commerce
  • George Spies, Traffic Violence Rapid Response

Applications for the second cohort of the CAC are now open! Join the CAC to meet other community leaders, work with OakDOT staff, and advise on major transportation projects.

We are looking for community members who can commit to a two-year term between June 2024 and June 2026. Meetings will be 2 hours long and will be held every three months. CAC members will meet in-person in downtown Oakland. Similar to the first cohort, CAC members of the second cohort will inform major transportation projects by providing feedback on approaches to community engagement as well as on the initial designs of major transportation projects. We are seeking community leaders who live, work, or whose organization/workplace serves the residents of West Oakland, Chinatown, Downtown Oakland, and the Jack London District. A small stipend will be provided to each CAC member for their time and participation.

Applications are open until May 13, 2024. For questions, email mpd@oaklandca.gov
