The Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force provides resources to locate, extricate, and provide immediate medical treatment to victims trapped in collapsed structures; and to conduct other life-saving operations.
Urban search-and-rescue is considered a "multi-hazard" discipline, as it may be needed for a variety of emergencies or disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, storms and tornadoes, floods, dam failures, technological accidents, terrorist activities, and hazardous materials releases. The events may be slow in developing, as in the case of hurricanes, or sudden, as in the case of earthquakes.
The Oakland Fire Department is proud to be the Sponsoring Agency for California Task Force 4. This team is comprised of men and women from 15 Fire Agencies from throughout the greater Bay Area, as well as trained experts in other fields, such as physicians and engineers. California Task Force 4 trains regularly and stands prepared to respond on short notice to requests for assistance within California or other parts of the United States.
