Urban farming, the small-scale cultivation of crops, has become increasingly popular throughout Oakland and the United States. To help support this vital movement and encourage local food production, the City of Oakland recently updated its zoning regulations related to urban agriculture. Read on for more about what is permitted "outright" for Oakland residents, and what types of activities require permits in different zones. Profiles of several local urban farming projects are also showcased below.
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) defines Use of Force (UOF) as any physical or mechanical intervention used by a member or employee to defend, control, overpower, restrain or overcome the resistance of an individual. OPD takes UOF seriously and has employed several strategies to reduce its occurrence (see definitions, strategies, and links to UOF levels below).

The city’s tourism industry continues to be an important engine for growth, supporting more than 7,100 local jobs. In 2016, a record 3.7 million visitors generated an estimated $827 million of economic impact in Oakland. Leisure, hospitality, and retail employment has grown significantly in the past five years, as reflected in national attention on the food and arts scene.
Now that you're CERT trained, there are many ways you can help. Submit your CERT Volunteer Interest so we know what kinds of "CERT activations" you're most interested in.
Volunteer to clean, green, and beautify Oakland! Each year thousands of people pitch in on a variety of projects such as litter and graffiti removal, landscaping, tree planting, habitat restoration, fire fuels management, and mosaic artwork installation. Public Works sponsors two annual City wide events for Oakland Earth Day and Oakland Creek to Bay Day. Public Works also supports MLK Day of Service, as well as volunteer projects throughout the year by groups and individuals looking to give back to their community.
