Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens

Urban farming, the small-scale cultivation of crops, has become increasingly popular throughout Oakland and the United States. To help support this vital movement and encourage local food production, the City of Oakland recently updated its zoning regulations related to urban agriculture. Read on for more about what is permitted "outright" for Oakland residents, and what types of activities require permits in different zones. Profiles of several local urban farming projects are also showcased below.

Use of Force (UOF) Levels

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) defines Use of Force (UOF) as any physical or mechanical intervention used by a member or employee to defend, control, overpower, restrain or overcome the resistance of an individual. OPD takes UOF seriously and has employed several strategies to reduce its occurrence (see definitions, strategies, and links to UOF levels below).

Use of Force Ad Hoc Committee

Oakland had an opportunity to reimagine policing and craft a policy that addresses the needs of our communities, provides clear guidelines for police engagement and prioritizes and respects the sanctity of life.

Vibrant Hospitality Sector

The city’s tourism industry continues to be an important engine for growth, supporting more than 7,100 local jobs. In 2016, a record 3.7 million visitors generated an estimated $827 million of economic impact in Oakland. Leisure, hospitality, and retail employment has grown significantly in the past five years, as reflected in national attention on the food and arts scene.
