In Fiscal Year 2019-20 staff serviced 59,215 Illegal Dumping work orders, which accounted for 55,236 cubic yards of debris being removed from neighborhoods. This is enough debris to fill a football field (100 yards long x 53.5 yards wide) 9.47 feet high or stretch 3.48 miles long at a height of 3 feet.
In 2019 the Street Sweeping program removed 5,355.30 tons of debris from the roadway that might have entered the bay through waterways.
In Fiscal Year 2019-20 the Vegetation Management staff removed 7,534,095 square feet of vegetation from the right-of-way, which helped to reduce the fuel load.

Boating programs are offered at Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary. Youth and community programs provide an entry point to gain skills to explore the wonders of Bay Area boating. You can host special events at Lake Merritt Sailboat House which is located about Lake Merritt Boating Center.
This Measure DD project includes six interpretive sign panels. The purpose of these signs is to connect people to the place and the wildlife that live at Lake Merritt and encourage stewardship. The six panels feature information on the Lake Merritt watershed, wildlife refuge history, birds of Lake Merritt, wildlife habitat, rain gardens, and the tidal lagoon ecosystem. The sign panels, measuring six feet wide by two feet tall, are scheduled for installation at the locations on the map below the week of May 15, 2023. Lake Merritt Sailboat House is next to the nation’s largest salt water tidal lake, Lake Merritt. Built in 1954, this unique landmark houses the Lake Merritt Boating Center and Lake Merritt Institute. It has convenient access to highway and public transportation with off-street parking. Lake Merritt is home to Oakland’s oldest wildlife preserve and is often called the “Jewel of Oakland.” At night, visitors will see “Necklace of Lights," an outdoor installation with 126 lampposts and more than 4,000 light bulbs around the shoreline. At day, visitors will see grassy knolls, picnic sites, walking paths, a view of the Pergola and Colonnade. Visitors can enjoy boating, sailing and gondola rides.
The Lake Merritt Station Area Plan envisions a culturally vibrant, mixed-income, high-intensity, mixed-use neighborhood around a rejuvenated Lake Merritt BART station.
An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) evaluates a proposed project's impacts on the physical environment, such as traffic, air pollution, historic and archeological resources, biology, geology, public services and utilities, and hazardous materials. An EIR also recommends steps to avoid or minimize those impacts, called mitigation measures.
The City of Oakland and partners are working to monitor, understand, and improve Lake Merritt water quality and maintain healthy conditions for fish and wildlife in the Lake. This work is aimed at preventing future fish kills like the one that occurred in August of 2022. This work builds off a legacy of habitat and water quality improvements to the Lake through Measure DD and other City and community efforts.

Enjoy bird watching near the five bird islands at Lake Merritt, the oldest wildlife refuge in North America.
Lakeside Park Garden Center and Lakeside Park features grassy knolls, a small beach area at the lake, a magnificent columned, marbled bandstand and numerous sites for outdoor inspiration.The Lakeside Park Garden Center is located inside Lakeside Park across from Lake Merritt, Lake Merritt Sailboat House and Children’s Fairyland. It is conveniently located near highway and public transportation access as well as off-street parking.Lakeside Park has a daily entrance fee as well as paid parking. Parking inside Lakeside Park on Bellevue Avenue is $2.00 for two hours (or $10 for all day parking) during weekdays and $5 all day parking on the weekend and holidays. The parking operating hours are from 7:30am until dusk. This oasis hosts garden shows, public and private events and numerous volunteer activities and services. Reservations are confirmed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
