Kiana Gums

Kiana Gums is a fourth-generation Oaklander, proudly serving her hometown as the Director of Communications and Engagement for the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). As a passionate public relations professional, she is committed to optimizing OIG’s impact via targeted and culturally-competent outreach strategies. Since joining the office, in January 2023, her work has already been instrumental to developing the OIG’s brand, and increasing visibility around police accountability in Oakland.

Prior to this role, Ms. Gums’s professional tenure includes managing communication projects on behalf of multi-national corporations, small business-owners, non-profit organizations, and former Councilmember Loren Taylor.

In 2018, she graduated from Loyola Marymount University with two Bachelor’s Degrees in Political Science and Economics. Currently, she sits on the Board of Directors of the Oakland African-American Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Gums attributes all of her success to her parents, who instilled in her a strong work-ethic and an unwavering sense of integrity. Her greatest accomplishment will forever be making them proud.
