Parking on sidewalks is illegal under Federal, State, and local law. When a motor vehicle is parked in a way that partially or fully obstructs a sidewalk, pedestrians – people walking, such as seniors and children, and those with mobility disabilities, such as wheelchair users or people who are blind – are denied the safe use of the public right of way.
Parking on sidewalks occurs more often on narrow streets (those less than thirty feet wide). Staff are evaluating narrow streets to determine if parking restrictions or one-way conversions are necessary to ensure pedestrians have access to the sidewalk and emergency vehicles have access to the roadway.
This project continues important work started by the Oakland Fire Department with the Hills Fire Safety Parking Project.
