OPD Shares First Quarter 2025 Crime Statistics
Today, Oakland Police Department (OPD) Chief Floyd Mitchell updated crime statistics for the first quarter of 2025. From January 1 through March 31, the City experienced a significant decrease in crime compared to the same period in 2024. OPD has seen reductions across nearly every major crime category.
All statistics reflect comparisons between the first quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.
- Overall Crime: Down 37% (From 10,498 to 6,583 incidents)
Violent Crimes (Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Rape, Robbery):
- Down 33% (from 1,894 to 1,265 incidents)
- Homicides: Increased by 15% (from 20 to 23 incidents)
- Aggravated Assaults: Down 22% (from 870 to 677 incidents)
- Rape: Down 33% (from 52 to 35 incidents)
- Robbery: Down 44% (from 952 to 530 incidents)
Property Crimes:
- Burglary: Down 36% (from 3,026 to 1,944 incidents)
- Motor Vehicle Theft: Down 46% (from 3,236 to 1,749 incidents)
These reductions are the result of ongoing collaboration between our community and OPD. Credit goes to the tireless efforts of everyone at OPD, including our specialized units: Ceasefire, Special Resource Section, Criminal Investigation Division, Intelligence Unit, Traffic Enforcement, and our dedicated Patrol Officers. Our partnerships with community-based organizations, local businesses, and law enforcement agencies continue to play a crucial role in our efforts to reduce crime.
While we are encouraged by the overall reductions, we remain concerned about the increase in homicides. One life lost is one too many. However, our Homicide Section has made tremendous strides, achieving a 70% clearance rate for the first quarter of 2025. This speaks volumes about the commitment and determination of our investigators.
If a crime has impacted you personally, it may not feel like crime rates are lowering. Please keep in mind that our officers are committed to investigating and resolving every case. The safety of our community remains our top priority.
