The History of Oakland Walking Tour was developed by local resident, David Peters, the Planning and Building Department’s Cultural Strategist in Government (CISG), as part of the Oakland General Plan Update (GPU) process.  It celebrates the city’s rich culture and history of community organizing and activism. This virtual tour takes you through some of the city's hidden gems, highlighting stories, living histories, and cultural landmarks that have often gone unrecognized.

The General Plan Update process, underway through 2026, is an exciting chance for everyone in Oakland to help plan the city's future while respecting the past. The General Plan aims to create livable and connected neighborhoods where people have access to everything they need, such as grocery stores, entertainment, stores, libraries, parks, and safe transportation. The walking tour will help city staff and residents alike to learn about Oakland’s history and make sure the General Plan builds on Oakland’s successes while acknowledging its historic challenges. Uplifting the city’s history and the amazing initiatives of local community-based organizations and local leaders is key to helping create a thriving Oakland for all.
