The Oakland Police Department (OPD) has investigated nearly 3,100 ShotSpotter activations citywide this year, which is down 9% from the same time last year.

On May 1, 2022, shortly after 12:00 p.m., OPD officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 1400 block of 85th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located evidence of a shooting and one victim inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound(s). OPD and Oakland Fire Department personnel provided medical aid and while treating the victim, a loaded firearm was seen inside the vehicle.

While conducting the follow-up investigation, a Police Services Technician (PST) noticed surveillance cameras and reviewed the video footage. The video shows two individuals placing what appears to be two firearms inside a parked vehicle following the shooting. A search warrant was authorized allowing officers to access the vehicle. Ultimately, two additional firearms possibly used in the shooting were recovered.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 238-3426.

This year, OPD has recovered more than 500 firearms, and ShotSpotter technology has assisted in a number of those recoveries.
