Oakland Creek to Bay Day Returns In-Person Saturday 9/17 as Volunteers Clean and Green Oakland’s Waterways

City support for in-person volunteering was suspended at the height of the pandemic; City staff and community volunteer leaders are excited to resume safe, outdoor event support

On Saturday, September 17, Oakland Public Works (OPW) will be back outside with neighborhood clean-ups along creeks and other waterways to celebrate Oakland Creek to Bay Day 2022. Volunteers will pick up litter, remove graffiti, weed and plant, and restore native habitats. Information about where you can volunteer is online at https://www.oaklandca.gov/topics/creek-to-bay.

This year OPW will sponsor seven event sites. Volunteers are encouraged to join us at one of these locations – there is one in each City Council district:

The sites listed above can accommodate large volunteer groups. Groups of 10 or more should RSVP with the project site coordinator. Individuals and small groups are encouraged, but not required, to RSVP.

The City knows volunteers might have questions about safety at natural water bodies stemming from recent natural phenomena that affected Lake Merritt and several miles of the regional shoreline. The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, in coordination with OPW, tested water at Lake Merritt on Aug. 22, and found low levels of contaminants consistent with levels observed since May 2022, and signage has been posted in affected areas. At these low levels, the City has advised caution to visitors at the lake. Boating is still allowed. Visitors should avoid touching the water, algae, and scum they might see, especially for children and pets. Cleaning activities like picking up litter are considered safe if participants wear gloves and wash their hands before eating afterward.
