The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating an incident where a 12-year-old was shot and wounded. Just after three this morning, OPD officers responded to a ShotSpotter Activation in the 2500 block of Rawson Street. Upon arrival, an individual told officers that they heard a noise outside their home. When they went outside, they saw someone attempting to steal the catalytic converter from their vehicle. The individual threw a chair in the direction of the unknown suspects, who then fired multiple shots at the individual. One of the bullets struck a 12-year-old child. The unknown suspects left the area in two separate vehicles. The 12-year-old was taken to an area hospital and treated for their injuries.

Like most major cities in America, Oakland has seen a sharp increase in violent crimes. Assaults with a firearm are up 73%. The most recent statics show 265 assaults with a firearm this year, compared to 153 at the same time last year. So far this year, OPD officers have recovered 500 firearms.

Gun violence was deemed an epidemic in this country by the President. OPD agrees and is encouraging our community and others to unite. We must put the guns down, strengthen our laws and hold those accountable for committing these violent crimes.

This is an ongoing investigation. If you have any information about this case, call the Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 238-3426.

#OPDCARES initiative is about working together as a community to help stop the tragic loss of life and reduce the level of violence in our city. Collectively, we want to ensure Oaklanders and our visitors are safe in our community. When there is a loss of life in Oakland, it impacts us all.
