When the Department has a critical incident involving our officers, we believe in transparency with our community, along with our effort to share information with our community.

Our goal in releasing this video is to allow the public to view the material in as clear and straightforward manner as possible, without editorial comment. We train to minimize the use of force and we take all uses of force very seriously.

Whenever a life is lost, it is tragic. We know there is concern in our community, whenever force is used. That is why we have provided you as much context as possible in this incident.

When an officer uses deadly force, there are reviews and investigations, we follow protocols that are in place. There are multiple independent investigations taking place, through the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, Richmond Police Department, the City of Oakland’s Community Police Review Agency and the Oakland Police Department.
